Yes, that Crockett Johnson

Crockett Johnson, famed creator of children’s classics like Harold and the Purple Crayon and the comic strip Barnaby, also did some advertising work and, at times political cartoons. Here is one such cartoon, which I find remarkably subtle and poignant. It is, simultanesouly, quite simple and complex; truly a masterpiece of a comic strip.

This cartoon was one of Johnson’s contributions to the Artists Against the Axis exhibit — which also featured the work of Charles Addams, Peter Arno, William Gropper, Syd Hoff, Charles Martin, Garret Price, Gardner Rea, Ad Reinhardt, Carl Rose, Saul Steinberg, among others. The cartoon also ran in New Masses on February 24, 1942.

Thanks for the great info Philip and your great website! That sounds like it was one heck of an exhibit.
