Jugend: Fire – Hoffmann von Bertenhof

A cover drawing from the second year of the legendary and pioneering German arts and cartoon weekly, Jugend (“Youth”). In its first era – the age of “Jugendstil” (youthful style) – artists frequently incorporated the title of the magazine, if not its eponymous cheer, “Youth!” into their drawings. Here the torches spell out the word. “Jugendstil” became the German term for Art Nouveau.
